I've lived my entire life in Atlanta and that means I've not seen much snow. We had a couple of noticeable days in the early 80s when I was a kid. And one of my favorite memories from those days is not missing school but of my mom making snow cream. I still remember the large pale yellow Tupperware bowl she'd take outside to scoop up the snow. So this past week when we had over 5 inches of powdery snow fall I knew I had to make snow cream for my kids.
I didn't have a recipe so I turned to google and friends. There was not one clear definitive recipe but most agreed to the same things, save Paula Deen who suggested mixing snow with Sweetened Condensed Milk. That may be too rich for my brood. I went with the general consensus and used:
Snow
Sugar
Milk or Evaporated Milk
and Vanilla Extract
Then I mixed away. A potato masher was quite handy for the job. I used no measuring cups just kept adding and tasting until the consistency and flavor were what I remembered.
The kids and my husband ate large bowls full, moaning through every other bite. I consider that a home run.
